Road safety and road traffic fatality is still an issue to developing countries. According to the World Health Organization, all over the world more than 1.2 million people die and up to 50 million are injured annually due to road crashes. Since most of road accidents are preventable, road safety and sustainable transportation systems are human right issues. Road safety is a human right because it is directly linked to the right of life. About 85% of countries do not have adequate laws that address the rates of traffic death and injuries.
Egypt has a serious issue with road safety and road traffic fatality. The traffic laws are poorly enforced and there is a lack of proper facilities for pedestrians. According to the World Health Organization, Egypt loses about 12,000 lives due to traffic accidents annually. This labels Egypt as one of the top 10 countries that has the most fatal road accidents.
There are many ways to help prevent accidents by enforcing stricter speed limit laws and simply wearing seatbelts. These two strategies are very effective because wearing a seatbelt reduces the risk of fatal injuries up to 75%. Lowering speed limits is effective because the odds of death dramatically increases with high speed. Child restraints are also very important because wearing appropriate restraints according to their size and weight significantly decreases the chances of death and injury. There are many passengers, drivers and officials that do not take the matter seriously and do not abide by the recommendation to wear a seatbelt or have the appropriate number of passengers in a single vehicle.
My designs aim to raise awareness for Egyptian and global officials, drivers and passengers; to raise conscious of the severity of issue and to change the attitude and approach.
